Little Aurora Babyalis
People, Aurora July 16th, 2008
Now we know what it takes to get me back to the blog. My sister must, literally, have a child. If that’s not worth writing about… what is? So, as I wrap up day one of my new role as uncle I thought I’d pause to jot down a few thoughts.
First; the facts. Aurora Johnson was born in Saskatoon, Sk in the evening of July 14th, 2008. She arrived about four weeks early but has arrived healthy. Currently, she resides in the hospital ICU where I can only assume the doctors and nurses are helping her gain her strength.
My sister, Jen, is also healthy. I spoke with her at 10:30pm on the 14th and she seemed well content. I do think that part of this can be attributed to the list of painkillers involved in childbirth. I am proud of the maturity and grace she has shown. She is shaping up to be a natural mother. I look forward to watching Jen and Aurora’s relationship grow and helping out whenever I can.
Aurora is not the first member of my immediate family to be born in Saskatchewan. She can now count herself part of an elite club consisting of her grandfather (Keith) and great grandfather (Loyal). She is, however, the first immediate Johnson born in the S0K area code in the last 50 years.
In keeping with my love of nicknames I have already devised one nickname for Aurora. Ahem, “Aurora Babyalis”. It’s almost too perfect.
Two things I noticed already:
1. Aurora is scowling in every picture I have seen. She has inherited her mother’s cheerful nature. Jen, if you ever ask me “Was I ever like that?” I will only ever laugh.
2. Aurora looks like Jen did when Jen was about 4 years old.
I didn’t ask Jen how she finally decided on Aurora, but it is fitting for at least one reason. Saskatchewan is nicknamed “The land of the living sky”. During the winter in Saskatchewan the nights are dark and it is very easy to see the Aurora Borealis.
While I was growing up I always spent time looking at the sky. Having grown up right in the GTA, there wasn’t much to watch. It’s nice that Aurora will be able to watch her namesake in action.
Whiiiiich leads me to my next topic. Gifts. Jen, I’m buying your daughter the drum set that no one ever bought you. Obviously. This has the dual outcome of; getting you with the same joke you wanted to get mom and dad with. And, finally getting mom and dad with the drum set joke after they believed the question had been put to rest.
I’m also planning on purchasing her a telescope. If there is anything I’d like Aurora Babyalis to pick up from me… it would be my curiosity and penchant for trouble that so often resulted in us setting things on fire when mom and dad left us home alone. If she is curious like that, she’ll dig a telescope.
For me, little Aurora Johnson is a defining moment in time. Marking a long road passed, since the Johnson Family began on Miller’s Grove to now. But also, marking a long road forward with a new family member to take part.
To Aurora: If my experience with this family is any guide, I can assure you the trip down that road is worth it. What I can’t assure you is that it will be a smooth ride. So, rest up little Aurora Babyalis. Welcome to the family.
